Holiday Shopping Guide - Call for Recommendations

One of the things that I always enjoyed doing with this blog in the past is creating a Holiday Shopping Guide (that’s a link to an old one for reference) for those of us who want to support small businesses and individuals with our shopping dollars.  Well, it’s definitely that time of year again, so I’m asking for suggestions and recommendations to put on the list.  In the past, we’ve included businesses, artisans, and even nonprofit organizations.

Please leave a comment with a link and a little about the business/artists/group, or email the information directly to me at lornadoone (at) Comcast (dot) net, and I’ll get to work putting together our Holiday Shopping Guide for 2010.   It's fine to promote yourself, too!

How about http://www.doybags.com/? They're women's coop in the Philippines who made bags and accessories out of old juice bags. Pretty neat stuff!

Mostly Boston-area local

On Etsy:
- Honey Design. Jewelry made by my friend [info]sweetgingertea. She makes pretty much all the earrings I wear.

- Made In Lowell. Cute felted designs, some handmade jewelry, and a local gal, to boot.

- Lily Pad Tutus is run by my friend, and has cute tutus and accessories for little kids. Local to Boston (metro-west).

- Jen in Maine. My friend Jen's shop, in Maine - yarn, knitted gifts, and hand made sewn items.

- Ashley G. Great artist, sells lots of prints. (a Portlander - Oregon)

- North Star Alpacas for alpaca roving, yarn, and knitted items. Out of Michigan.

-Fabulosity is a friend of Jen (see above), out of Montana, who spins and dyes yarn and roving.

- Ginger Louse Clothing - fun country-styled clothes for kids

- Maine Woods Yarn sells yarn and wool for spinning. Local to Maine. The drop spindle I use for spinning is from them. :)

- And last, but not least: My shop. Crocheted scarves and hats, mostly. :)

Websites:
- Art by Ursula Vernon ([info]ursulav on LJ). Quirky, but beautiful art. Surrealism meets realism meets humour.

- Starfire's Creations out of southern NH. Lots of body butters, soaps, candles, lip balms, etc. All handmade. She makes great stuff, to order (so it can take a few weeks to get your stuff, but it's worth it). I use her body butters.
Greenheart is a wonderful non-profit store selling fair trade and eco-conscious gifts. You can get all kinds of great things--accessories, children's clothing and toys, household goods, bath and body products, and they also sell several different kinds of gorgeous fair-trade and recycled wrapping paper and gift bags to tie your purchases up in!

Renegade Handmade is a brick and mortar store in Chicago selling items handmade by many local artisans. It has a lot of hip, ironic handmade gifts and everything they sell is a 50/50 split consignment with the original artisan. It has all the joy of browsing etsy.com while also contributing to our local economy through real estate taxes and rents.

I just bought (but have not yet picked up) some coffee from Cafe Justo.
I just got the November/December issue of Mothering magazine. (A great green, attachment parenting, nature-seeking parenting magazine.) It includes their annual toy review--two great articles on the best natural toys of 2009 and "Fresh Ides for Green Holidays" with activities, crafts, and gift ideas. Lots of photos, shop links, and suggestions for infants on up. :)
